The stairs leading to the colonnade in the Flower Garden are dangerous

QUESTION:

On Saturday 30 April 2016 I visited Kroměříž and the Flower Garden. I wanted to climb up the Colonnade and enjoy the wonderful view. However, I found it very difficult to descend the stairs. It was very unpleasant for me, as well as for many other visitors, to find out that you have to use the same stairway to go up and down. There was an unpleasant “jam” – the stairs are too narrow, there are no lights. This makes the stairs very dangerous!

I am not a senior or handicapped citizen. However, I do think that the thousands of people who come to this UNESCO listed garden would deserve at least a little improvement, like a little traffic light or a volunteer helping around the stairs, etc. In fact, the best thing would be to build another stairway on the far end of the Colonnade.

ANSWER:

The Flower Garden is the only preserved garden of its kind in Europe. Other gardens underwent various fashionable changes, while the Flower Garden preserved the original style and appearance from the time of its foundation. Between 2012 and 2014 it went through a major reconstruction, and one of the aims of this project was to preserve the original authenticity of the garden and the restoration of its condition from the late 17th century when it was established by the Bishop of Olomouc Karl II von Liechtenstein-Castelcorno.

The management of the Archbishop’s Chateau and Gardens in Kroměříž is responsible for maintaining the garden in the best way possible; we must preserve the Flower Garden in the existing condition for the future generations and you will surely understand that we cannot interfere in such a unique building as the 1671Colonnade. We are dealing with the issue of the stairs the use of the observation platform on top of the Colonnade, but we all must bear in mind that it is simply not possible to build any new stairs at the far end, not to mention installing traffic lights or any other signalling systems. We want our visitors to experience the authentic feeling of the historical owners of the Flower Garden, who had to climb up and down the same stairs. And to do so, we encourage our visitors to accept this condition and to be patient and help each other while going up or down so that everyone can see the fascinating garden from this elevated position, just like the bishops and archbishops of Olomouc did in the past centuries.
