Olomouc Archbishops placed a strong emphasis on the development of their representative residence and therefore invested significant funds to ensure the best artists, architects and construction engineers of their epoch were entrusted with is improvement. Most were enthusiastic supporters of the art of gardening, a discipline combining technical and artistic skills with philosophical insight.
As a result of these efforts, two examples representing the pinnacle of gardening art can be found in the historic monument grounds of Kromeriz: a formal Baroque ´Libosad´ (today known as “the Flower Garden”) and the Chateau Garden, a multifaceted 19th century landscape. Both gardens are so unique that they were added, along with the Archiepiscopal Castle, to the UNESCO World National and Cultural Heritage List in 1998.
In 2010, the forming National Centre of Gardening Art began a special project in Kromeriz. Its goal, in addition to renovating parts of both gardens, is to build a multiregional methodical and educational centre for the care and renovation of historic gardens.
